What a great surprise when this single came out with my favorite song from the full-length album Beyond Flatline. The driving rhythm and excellent elements of this track are captured in four remixes that are all very well done. The first remix is just named "remix", and that’s exactly what it is, just a slight variation on the original, comparable to a "radio edit". The "club remix" extends the song by a minute making it easier to mix with other tracks but maintains the same solid approach as the original. Iris add their talents with the "Iris Remix" which takes that great Synthpop style and adds their signature approach to this great track. And finally we’re left with the "Severed Heads" remix done by Severed Heads which takes a slightly minimalistic approach leaving the percussion as the solid foundation slowly building and adding loops and layers to provide a full and dynamic sound which again fades to the end.

The "b-side" tracks included on this single are also excellent. These include remixes of the experimental track "Contact", "Watching Over You" and "Transformer". Each of these remixes are very well done which made it very hard for me to pick out a favorite. "Watching Over You" steps down the beat a notch to a nice mid-tempo and Haujobb adds their own experimental approach to this track adding a bit of variety and texture to it. "Contact" was already quite experimental to begin with, but Cut.Rate.Box manages to add their own layered electronic elements to it for a further experimental approach. Stromkern contribute their unique take on EBM music with the break beats and pulsing electronics on "Transformer" for a well-done remix.

Additional unreleased songs include "Without You" and "Traitor". "Without You" has quickly become my favorite selection on this single. While the remixes of the other tracks are very well done, which is a feat in itself, this stellar track surpasses the others in many ways. The lyrical content is intelligent and thoughtful, the vocals are solid and emotional as the layered synths and moving rhythm drive it all home to the listener. "Traitor" breaks out some of the experimental elements with the percussion adding distortions here and there, but overall keeps that same solid dance-friendly beat and crisp vocals mixed with harsh distortion thrown in to add a bit of an Industrial sound. The overall power and intensity are turned up a notch on this track also, making it a great addition to this single providing even more variety.

I think this single really breaks out of the mold of the "single dilemna" that I mention so often when presented with a single full of different remixes of the same song with maybe on or two additional tracks. There is a enough diversity in the additional material supplied that it really becomes something of an EP rather than a Maxi CD. The diversity of the remixes are nice, yet they all maintained solid integrity from the original style and content. I highly recommend it to all fans of this and similar groups.

As if their full-length album Beyond Flatline was not enough, Seabound bless us once more with their latest offering. The Poisonous Friend EP is loaded with brilliant re-workings of the single, along with two exclusive non-album tracks. The first remix is exquisitely performed, with drum sounds reaching the red line. A passionate vocal performance accompanies the musical mayhem, bringing the masses to their feet. The Iris remix starts off with a softer approach, leaning towards techno. Space age sound design combines with robot-like vocal effects for a galactic effect. By Cut Rate Box's "Contact" remix, things get very interesting. Distorted bleeps play alongside throbbing bass lines and prepare the listener for an upcoming synthesized battle ground. I particularly like the metallic percussion elements with highly processed vocal textures. This is one serious remix that will challenge even the most avid studio engineers.

Haujobb brings a smooth vibe to "Watching Over You" with moving beats and percussion. The non-album track "Without You" offers a synth-pop tapestry. The catchy chorus, "without you, day is nothing but a waste of light," keeps you engaged. I could see this becoming a huge radio hit. "Transformer" is transformed into a groovy track with a hip hop feel. The vocal distortion on the chorus fits nicely here. The EP climaxes with "Traitor," a mean electro machine. Easily the strongest of the set, "Traitor" presents a dark and sinister realm bursting with energy. This one is capable of waking the dead. Following in this scheme, the PF club mix leaves no dance floor stone unturned. Finally, we come to the Severed Heads' remix, a noisy blend of programming and effects processing. This is my least favorite version.

The great thing about this release is that it's much more than just a CD single with a few remixes thrown in. The non-album tracks and superb artwork make this a worthy addition to the Seabound catalog.

After the success of two widely popular albums, No Sleep Demon and Beyond Flatline, electronic wizards Frank Spinath and Martin Vorbrodt, better known as Seabound, return to the forefront with their latest release Poisonous Friend. This release is an EP and a single all in one as the title track "Poisonous Friend," is found on Beyond Flatline and several remixes of that track are included on this disc. There are other remixes of tracks from their last album as well as two previously unreleased tracks that create a more flowing EP than a strict single-oriented release. Seabound's music is melodic and moving as their harmony on vocals, especially during their song choruses, is powerful and uplifting. They create highly addictive EBM beats that are so wrapped in synth programming that you can easily lose yourself in the sound. The EP moves with ease from dance club friendly and accessible to harder-edged industrial thumpings. This is achieved through a well thought-out list of remixers for these tracks. Bands such as the fast and furious cut.rate.box, the always innovative musical styling of Haujobb and the more dance floor friendly synthpop sounds of Iris are all represented on this release. Another important note of the remixers on this disc is the old school industrial masters Severed Heads, who add just a hint of nostalgia to make the disc all the more pleasing. This disc is a perfect sister piece to Beyond Flatline, which is a must-have album for your collection. Once you get that one, get this EP, you will be pleased with both.

(Stefan Brunner)

        SIDE-LINE  No.47 (04-06/2004)

"Poisonous Friend" was chosen to become the new single of Seabound's brilliant second album "Beyond Flatline". The German duo teamed up with genius Olaf Wollschläger to produce the 2 main remixes of this new EP. And I must say that the choice was judicious. He already did a damned good job when working together with acts like Melotron and In Strict Confidence, but his two remixes here guarantee to Seabound a oneway ticket to the biggest dancefloors of the scene... Next to these, several remixers lend their talent to the band’s new tracks. I personally particularly appreciated Haujobb's impressive rhythmic treatment of the moving "Watching Over You", the allure and precision of Iris' interpretation of the title track and Cut.Rate.Box's challenging modern deconstruction and reconstruction of "Contact". Other featured remixers include Severed Heads (the return?) and Stromkern, and as if this release was not perfect yet, Seabound offer 2 exclusive bonus tracks to their fans with the relaxed and melodic "Without You" and the more upbeat and tortured "Traitor". For those who missed the new album, this epcd will rapidly convince them rushing to the closest record shop and put their hands on this essential album by this exceptional band named Seabound, my own favourite poisonous friends...
